Everyone knows tapas. They are such micro dishes that are usually eaten in a bar, as an accompaniment to a drink. In the Basque Country, these tapas are called Pintxos in Basque, and they are a culinary delight. We followed the picturesque coastline from France on our way to see the waves. Along the way, we spent a few delightful days camping in San Sebastián.
In addition to its distinct language, Euskara, the Basque Country is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditions. This unique blend of linguistic diversity, culinary delights like Pintxos; and the breathtaking coastal landscapes make exploring the campings near San Sebastián an unforgettable experience. Immerse yourself in the charm of this region; where language, culture, and nature seamlessly come together to create a one-of-a-kind travel adventure.
Ema and I had the pleasure of visiting San Sebastián by motorhome for four great days. Soaking in the captivating atmosphere of this charming coastal town.

Plan your camping stay in San Sebastián in advance
Staying in campings near San Sebastián is a fantastic experience, but it’s essential to plan ahead, especially during peak tourist seasons. The official motorhome parking can get crowded, as we experienced even in early September. Nevertheless, we found an excellent alternative by parking in a free car park close to the city center. This decision granted us easy access to both the charming old town in the west and the modern part of the city in the east. Allowing us to savor the best of San Sebastián without any worries about parking availability. San Sebastián truly offers a delightful blend of old-world charm and modern allure, making it a memorable destination for motorhome travelers.
The two bays of San Sebastián
A view of the western part of San Sebastian. On the left you can see the old town, which has stylish bars and restaurants. I recommend not eating for at least a day before visiting the town. The eastern part is a newer town with taller, modern buildings and a nice beach.
Surfing in San Sebastian
San Sebastian is the perfect place to live the surfer’s life. It’s the perfect size, flat city, so you can skate or longboard there. You surf right in town. The convenient beach and surrounding streets have an unreal vibe. There are cafes, bars, surf shops everywhere. People walking down the street in wetsuits with surfboard in hand. Just a blast. I’m a city boy, I’ve lived in the city centre all my life, so I’m addicted to cities. I liked it a lot. I would move to San Sebastian in a heartbeat.
How do we rate San Sebastián by motorhome?
If I were to rate San Sebastián, it would easily place among the top seaside towns in Spain. Personally, I found campings near San Sebastián far more enjoyable than bustling Barcelona, where the constant push to sell something can be overwhelming. In San Sebastián, there’s a comforting sense of feeling at home, not to mention the incredible opportunity to catch some waves with ease right within the city limits.
San Sebastián by motorhome offers a unique way to explore this stunning city. While navigating its streets may seem challenging, the wide roads outside the old town make it accessible for motorhome travelers. It’s a great idea to opt for the official motorhome parking areas or one of the campsites listed above. It allows you to safely leave your vehicle and then easily cycle or walk into the enchanting old town.
In addition, the convenience of camping or motorhome parking ensures that you can fully immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of San Sebastián without the hassle of driving in crowded city streets. So, relax and enjoy the picturesque surroundings of San Sebastián, knowing that your vehicle is secure, and adventure awaits just a short walk or bike ride away.
