Planty Park In Krakow

The Planty is a historic park and green belt that surrounds the Old Town of Krakow, Poland. It was created in the early 19th century. On the site of the city’s former defensive walls, which were dismantled to allow for the city’s expansion. The Planty is a lush and picturesque green space featuring walking paths, gardens, trees, and benches.

The Planty is a unique city garden that encircles the oldest part of Krakow. It is also one of the larger parks in Krakow, covering an area of approximately 20 hectares with a circumference of over 4 kilometers. In the past, the location of the Planty was occupied by the city walls and a moat. In 1820, the Senate of the Free City of Krakow decided to implement a modern concept of an open city. They demolished the remnants of the medieval walls, filled in the moat, and drained the marshes. The Planty was then planted with trees, predominantly chestnut trees. Today, the pathways of the Planty provide an ideal place for rest for weary tourists exploring the city. Numerous monuments can also be found here, including those dedicated to Michał Bałucki, the poet Bojan, Jadwiga and Jagiełło, Lilia Weneda, Artur Grottger, Nicolaus Copernicus, Grażyna and Litawor, and Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński.
